When to start orthodontic treatment?

Orthodontic problems are usually apparent by the age of seven, when most of the adult front teeth have erupted. However, your dentist may detect an orthodontic problem earlier and request an early orthodontic consultation. Early identification of potential orthodontic problems such as crowding of teeth, protruding of teeth or too much space between teeth will allow your Doctor to determine the best time to commence effective treatment.

Some orthodontic treatment can be started early, this can prevent more serious problems from developing.

It is not always easy for parents to tell if their child has an orthodontic problem. Some signs or habits that may indicate the need for orthodontic intervention are:

  • Early or late loss of baby teeth
  • Difficulty in chewing or biting
  • Mouth breathing
  • Thumb sucking
  • Crowded and malaligned teeth

It can also help to make treatment at a later stage shorter and less complicated. Once the face and jaws have stopped growing early intervention treatment is not possible.

The advantage of finding orthodontic problems early is that it is often easier to correct early than if it were left until later in life.
