Retention
Retainer (clear)
Following the removal of your braces you will be required to wear
retainers as part of your ongoing care. This phase of treatment allows
the bone and gum tissue to change and modify itself around the teeth
in the new position. Failure to wear the retainers may result in movement
and unfavourable changes; as the teeth are part of the body's biological
system, there can be a natural tendency for teeth to move once braces
are removed. Teeth will move as part of the growth and aging process.
To
guard against this happening it is important that retainers are always
worn as instructed by your orthodontist. Your final orthodontic result
will depend very much on your cooperation and diligence during this
phase of treatment. A retention program is individually tailored for
each patient, which usually involves wearing removeable retainers
and or fixed wires (bonded retainers).
Floss threader
Flossing
under a bonded retainer takes special care. The use of Superfloss
which has a stiff threader on the end, or a Floss threader to pass
the floss under the bonded retainer and below the gum line efficiently
allows removal of plaque and debri.
